Self-published ebooks now rank third in the publisher best-seller list covering the whole of 2013, with only giant publishers Hachette and Penguin Random House beating self-pub.
Hachette is in top spot, according to figures from Digital Book World, with 258 best sellers over the year but Penguin Random House would be the runaway leader with 478 best-selling ebooks if the recently merged company’s component parts were counted together for the whole year.
In the first half of this year, Penguin and Random House were accounted for separately while the two imprints’ sales were combined for the second half.
Self-publishing continued the strong performance shown in the first half of 2013 and the sector ended up with 99 best sellers, ahead of Harper Collins in sixth spot on 91 and Simon & Schuster at seventh with 72, while Amazon took ninth position with 46 best sellers.
