Food for thought with cookbooks winning KDP Pen to Publish awards

Cookbooks took the top prizes in the latest Kindle Direct Pen to Publish Contest (2019) which received more than 10,000 entries this year from a very wide range of self-publishing authors in India.

Winner of the long-form prize in English was B Ramakrishan with OPOS Cookbook: The story of India through food, while Bruno Guru won the long-form prize in Hindi with The Science and Psychology of the Paleo Diet.

The long-form winners received a cash prize of Rs 5 lakh (500,000 rupees, equivalent to around $6,600 or £5,300), a merchandising deal and a chance to be mentored by the contest judges. The first runners-up received Rs 1 lakh each and second runners-up Rs 50,000 each.

Runners-up included The Apple by Devashish Sardana, a mystical/mythological thriller; and The Ex factor by Varsha Dixit, a romance which is the third and final book in the Wallflower series.

Amol Gurwara, Country Manager, Kindle Content India, says, ‘It was interesting to see authors coming from various walks of life like bloggers, vloggers, corporate professionals, homemakers.’

The OPOS Cookbook is by B Ramakrishan who has a devoted following on Facebook. OPOS stands for One Pot One Shot and uses a pressure cooker to produce meals quickly.
